I do not economize on the number of readings-even for a novel. Is there a way to economize on the number of readings? Do you have a strategy for checking all those things as you read? As a reader, it’s difficult to focus on all those things in only one or two read-throughs, but at some point, too many readings would become problematic-especially for a novel-length work. And you warn against other potential flaws: filters, linking verbs, flashback, underdeveloped characters, and so forth. ![]() Here she talks with Shop Talk contributing editor Carol Saller.ĬS: In Writing Fiction you suggest a number of questions to ask about a manuscript when revising: is there unnecessary summary, is it original, is it clear, etc. Lawton Distinguished Professor Emerita at Florida State University and winner of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Humanities Council. Since the publication of Dark Emu in 2014, Pascoe’s life has been transformed. Watching him closely, I saw a man of the people – a self-described “storyteller” and “broken-down cricketer” an avuncular mediator who had come to explain the sophistication of Indigenous cultures to an eager, largely non-Indigenous audience a popular writer whose books and sage-like public persona have become a cultural phenomenon.Īs the session came to an end, the audience rose to its feet in rapturous applause. ![]() Pascoe doesn’t regale his audience so much as woo them with parables. There was a lot of repeated information / thoughts throughout the story and within inner monologues that I feel should have been weeded out. It made the dialogue in many cases seem stilted, stiff, and unnatural. But there were a few things that kept me from fully enjoying this.įor one, a BIG pet peeve of mine with dialogue is when a character reiterates a fact or tidbit the person they are speaking to would already know, but it’s added in the conversation for the sake of the reader’s knowledge or to serve as a reminder of something that happened in a past book. But while Kiedis fails to scratch beneath the surface of his fast-lane life, his frankness is moving, especially toward the end of the book, when his mea culpa turns into a full-blown account of recovery and redemption. Though he peppers his book with little known facts (for instance, the author narrowly missed being named Clark Gable Kiedis), the punk-funk rocker dedicates too few pages to his introspective music-writing process and too many to his incessant drug use and revolving door of girlfriends (which included actress Ione Skye, singer Sinéad O'Connor and director Sofia Coppola). Raised in the 1960s and '70s by a drug dealer father who first introduced his preteen son to drugs by mashing them into bananas, the high school delinquent and UCLA dropout seemed destined for a life of rabble-rousing until his high school band-cofounded by close friends Michael "Flea" Balzary and Hillel Slovak-took off and became one of the most popular groups of the 1990s. For a musician who has spent the better half of his life either intoxicated or on a drug high, Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has produced a surprisingly detailed account of his life. ![]() ![]() Callie's competing loyalties to both parents prove trying as she grapples with creating friendships and fulfilling family expectations.
